Newspapers and Periodicals
Newspapers and Periodicals can supply a wealth of information to a genealogist. Society Pages and Obituaries contain vital information about many of life’s happenings:
- Stories.
- Births, Marriages and Deaths.
- Professions.
- What people were doing.
- Political and Civic activities.
Many sources are available, for example:
- PERSI – Periodical Source Index – Go to: findmypast.com and Log in.
- In the “Quick Links” section click the “Newspapers and periodicals” link.
- The available collections include:
- British newspapers.
- Irish newspapers.
- PERiodical Source Index (PERSI).
- US & World newspapers.
- PERSI is the largest subject index to genealogy and local history periodical articles in the world. This index was created by the staff of the Allen County Public Library. Findmypast is currently adding images to the index.
- Only a small portion of the indexes have images, but more are being added. If an original image is desired, a link is provided to order each indexed record from the Allen County Public Library.
- Newspapers.com – Owned by Ancestry:
- Is a paid subscription not included with a free Ancestry account.
- Is the largest online newspaper archive.
- Contains 12,200+ newspapers from the 1700’s–2000’s.
- Millions of additional pages are added every month.
- Total pages – almost 520 million currently.
